Cell metabolism is the series of processes that take place in living organisms to sustain those organisms. In cell biology and molecular biology, metabolism refers to the biochemical reactions that happen inside organisms to produce energy.

‘Cellular metabolism’ addresses the major biochemical pathways and processes of the cells of the body. These include the central metabolic pathways involved in energy production: the tricarboxylic acid or Krebs cycle, and ATP synthesis through the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation (chemiosmotic theory).

Cells are constantly carrying out thousands of chemical reactions needed to keep the cell, and your body as a whole, alive and healthy. These chemical reactions are often linked together in chains, or pathways. All of the chemical reactions that take place inside of a cell are collectively called the cell’s metabolism.

Metabolism refers to the reactions that occur within your body’s cells that provide your body with energy, and use energy to perform bodily functions like digestion and breathing.
