    Uttam Kumar, widely known as the Mahanayak, was an Indian film actor, producer, director, screenwriter, composer, and playback singer who predominantly worked in Bengali cinema. His career spanned three decades, from the late 1940s until his death in 1980.
    He is the namesake of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar metro station in Tollygunge and the Mahanayak Samman Award given by the Government of West Bengal. Uttam Kumar, widely known as the Mahanayak, was an Indian film actor, producer, director, screenwriter, composer, and playback singer who predominantly worked in Bengali cinema.
    He debuted as Arun Kumar Chatterjee as a child artist in the 1948 film Drishtidaan directed by Nitin Bose. The film was unsuccessful. Next year he appeared as a leading hero as Uttam Chatterjee in the film Kamona 1949 which was flop again. He changed name again as Arup Kumar. In 1951 film Sahajatri he kept his name permanently as Uttam Kumar.
    On the night of 24 July 1980, Uttam Kumar was declared dead after he failed to recover from what was, by an account, his fifth cardiac arrest. After his last attack in 1978, he was diagnosed with cardiac asthma. In fact, for much longer, his heart had been a problem. He always carried a sorbitrate for any abnormal spasm of the chest.
