    Basingstoke is a large town in Hampshire, England. It is 48 miles (77 km) southwest of London, 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Southampton, 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Reading and 19 miles (31 km) northeast of Winchester. In 2008 it had an estimated population of 82,913. It is part of the borough of Basingstoke and Deane.
    Basingstoke is a market town in Hampshire. It has been around since the Domesday Book, but was developed as a 'new town', one of several constructed in the 1950s to accommodate overspill population from London.
    Many people think that Basingstoke is just an overspill town to house the growing population of London. Although the town did expand rapidly in the 1960s, the history of Basingstoke goes back much further than that. The earliest known settlement in the area is a Neolithic campsite from around 3000 BC.
    As part of the London Overspill plan, along with places such as Ashford and Swindon, Basingstoke was rapidly developed in the late 1960s as an 'expanded town', in similar fashion to Milton Keynes.
